Crazy but fun week ahead for sports here at OC16!

Wednesday and Thursday we will bring you live coverage of the HHSAA girls volleyball tournament. Doubleheader starting at 5pm from the McKinley bracket.

Friday - we switch to the OIA football semifinals and a doubleheader starting at 4:30 pm live from Aloha Stadium.

Saturday, back to volleyball for the HHSAA D1 and D2 title games from the Blaisdell Arena starting at 5pm.

I know we'll be missing the HHSAA girls volleyball semifinals on Friday. It's happened the last couple of years.

Personally I love the semifinals of any state tournament, there's just something special when you have the four top teams going at it. Sometimes the semi's are the best games...trumping the action from the title round.

But the OIA football semifinals are wildly popular and draw a huge TV audience. So that's why they get the nod overall vball.

Not great but the overlapping schedules are beyond our control.

Enjoy the week of sports!

I think it's good to get feedback from our viewers. Whether good, bad, or concerned it offers us a way to see other points.

I try to email directly back to those who post a comment or feedback email. Because part of my job is to educate on how games, schedules, and other things get done.

But ya know... It's awfully tough to send back a reply when a person uses a fake email address. If you took the time and have the concern to write something up, don't you want an answer?

Here's an example that came in Friday night - November 14.

From: OC16.tv site [mailto:no-reply@oc16.tv]
Sent: Friday, October 14, 2011 9:56 PM
Subject: Contact Us form submitted

Name: Shy Figs
Email: fig_wat@msn.com
Subject: live games
Department: Sports
Message: you guys are idiots not to show the top team in the state (Farrington) vs Mililani I think it will be the best game out of all the games being played but no you guys wanna show Leilehua vs Moanalua are you guys prejeduice against showing Farr. or Kahuku wat too much SAMOANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's what I wrote to Mister "Shy Figs,"

Hi there,

Thanks for the note and your obvious passion for high school football.

Next week’s quarterfinal game was tough to choose.

Any one of the four is a worthy choice. But the panel – OIA officials, football coaches, and OC16 staff – thought Leilehua/Moanalua could be the upset special of the round. (Based on Moanalua nearly upsetting Kahuku and Farrington.) At the very least it’s projected to be highly entertaining.

I respect your view on Farrington vs Mililani. If we were doing a Saturday game it would have allowed one more pick.

As for any racial prejudice that is completely wrong to propose. Our own crew has Samoans and people who call Kahuku home. The panel has Polynesians on it as well.

While I know a lot of people wanted to see Kahuku and Farrington games, as I’ve blogged about and talked about forever... OC16 asked to schedule Kahulu vs Kamehameha in interleague but both the OIA and ILH said no to TV coverage. We also wanted to show Farrington vs Kahuku but the OIA said no.

Kahuku and Farrington have a great shot to be seen in the semifinals and championship games of the OIA tournament. Likely HHSAA games too. So hang in there, they’re time is coming and it could happen in the biggest games of all.

So Figs... If you're out there...that's what you would have gotten from me direct.

By all means, send in what's on your mind via feedback button or blog comment. But if you really want to talk about it - be up and up - and use your real email address.

So this week OC16 will have two of the four OIA first-round football playoff games.

Friday: Mililani vs Castle 7pm

Saturday: Kailua vs Aiea 7pm

Games were selected based upon evaluations and rankings from a number of prep coaches, league officials, and OC16 staff.

Kailua and Aiea graded out tops with a tough, physical game expected.

Mililani vs Castle was next with a predicted air show and higher score.

Moanalua vs Kapolei would have been the second pick but Kapolei is so beat up with injuries it's tough going for the Hurricanes. Moanalua seems to always have new and unique game plans and calls.

Waianae vs Kaiser, so hard to figure the Cougars who have wins via a forfeit and the last place division team.

***

Next week gets really tough to call. Just one game with four really, really, good matchups to pick from.

Do we go with Kahuku and Farrington's respective games? Both haven't been on TV so there's a strong push there right?

But a potential Leilehua vs Moanalua could be very interesting. Na Menehune nearly upset Kahuku and Farrington. Could they knock off the third-ranked Mules?

How the teams play this weekend will factor into the final decision.

Good luck to everyone!

Pretty much from the first weeks of the OC16 football broadcasts in August, a more than frequent question has been:

"How come Kahuku is not on the schedule for TV games on OC16?"

A lot of those emails added a few extra "colorful" words. I'm sure you get the idea.

People on their own have come up with all sorts of conspiracy theories. My favorite being that the OIA and OC16 are blackballing Kahuku because of missteps last year and this season.

I mean really? Punishing the student-athletes and the entire school for what real reason?

The truth is this.

OC16 would never play such silly games to purposely keep a team off of TV. Every school from every league is treated the same in our eyes.

The OIA would never ask such a thing too.

Putting together the TV schedule is never easy. Every year some schools feel left out while others are seen as given special treatment.

OC16 sits down with the leagues (OIA, ILH, HHSAA, etc.) and go over potential matchups.

Factors that come into play:

* Spreading the TV coverage during Interleague Games so some schools that wouldn't get coverage are shown. This part of the season is why you will see some of the "smaller" schools chosen over potential big names.

* Friday versus Saturday. We always do Friday nights. But budget constraints don't allow all Saturdays to be programmed for TV games. So depending on the date needed, some teams may or may not be available.

* Competitive games versus blowouts. Since we set the schedule a couple of months in advance, we try to project which games will be close competitive games. A close exciting game is always the ideal for TV. In the OIA Red East, Kahuku traditionally has its way with most division members. In the OIA Red West, teams 1-4 are usually a little more balanced against each other.

In the end, what we schedule is a mix of the above reasons and a bunch more. It's not an exact science. Injuries and grades can really torpedo a projected strong team or matchup.

Now for Kahuku fans...

We wanted to schedule Interleague Kahuku vs Kamehameha. But both leagues asked us to skip it because it was a stadium game. One that raises much needed funds for both leagues. We totally understand and agreed.

Kahuku vs Farrington was also proposed. But... Because this game is being played at Roosevelt's field this season, we were again asked to stay away. Why? Because they need every inch of space to squeeze officials and cars in. The crowds flooding the Makiki area create a lot of problems for the people living there. Our big TV truck and crew only make it worse. So again we understand and do something else.

Ideally I'd like some Kahku in the regular season but I also know, we should get a lot of them in the postseason TV schedule.

Yes there's more OIA Red West this year on OC16. But that's based on available dates, games we didn't get, and projected balanced games. Kailua and Castle shapes up to be our big rivalry game in the OIA Red East.

Yes Mililani is on the most. No me being an alum doesn't factor in to it happening. The leagues have to approve the schedule and they wouldn't put up with such bias. Last year the complaint was Leilehu was on too much.

Kahuku's head coach Reggie Torres is a good friend of mine. I don't think he'd be a friend if he knew his school and community were being yanked around by myself or OC16.

OK there you have it. The shocking truth is this.

We wanted to big Kahuku football games but for valid reasons, could not do them.

I fully expect you'll see the Red Raiders a lot during their usual postseason march.

In the end, I think it's great that people question and ask why? It shows us there is a demand and interest in prep sports being on OC16.
